Miles away, Nurse Wesley finished her conversation with the teenager who had been in the motorcycle accident. The kid had not seen the pothole while going seventy and lost control of the bike. Both of his arms were bandaged heavily from his wrists to his shoulders. They had already removed patches of skin from his buttocks and thighs and used them to try and mend the areas that had been chewed up by the asphalt. Although he had not been wearing a helmet, he had only a slash to his skull.
It was a miracle he was still alive.
The nurse went down the hall into room 511 and thought the same thing. It was a miracle the man was still alive. Suffering a fall from a two story height could easily kill even the hardiest of souls, not to mention a man in his seventies. However, there was not much more they could do for this one now. The doctors felt he was in an irreversible coma. They were waiting a few days, hope against hope, that the brain swelling would go down, that somehow there could be a recovery.
Poor guy was done for, she thought. Let him go.
Nurse Wesley went to the drip bag and examined it. She took up his chart and entered in her notes as she studied the monitors. She half expected the poor guy to have expired even before she came on her shift. All she could do was monitor his condition and act the dutiful, sorrowful nurse when the end came.
For some unexplainable reason a nagging obsession made her go check the IV drip once more, almost like one of her attacks of obsessive compulsive disorder again. She suffered mild spells of that condition before through the years: checking and rechecking locked doors, driving back home to make sure she had let the garage door down. Mostly innocent mild instances like that.
But she had not experienced a wave of compulsion in a long time.
Odd that it was happening now, she thought.
The bag was fine, the drip set correctly.
Just before she walked away, she gave a final glance to the patient. Only then did she notice that he had opened his eyes and was trying to mouth some words.
